The month July refers to Julius Caesar, whose birthday was in this month. The Germanic name was Heuert or Heumond (hay month), since hay was harvested at this time (hauen = mowing grass).
The picture, “Great Piece of Turf” by Albrecht Dürer (1503) showed meadow plants in a realistic style for the first time, wild growing herbs and grasses in all of their beauty.
Apart from hay harvest, July is a month of summer tranquillity, in which a transcendent release from the ordinary and mundane is favoured. |
