Sphinxes—those unfathomable hybrid creatures with the head of a human (in ancient Egypt, the head of a male or female ruler), the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the tail of a bull—reveal their secrets, and we receive them as inspirations. The two sphinxes face each other, eye to eye, and so neutralize the danger of their presence for the uninitiated. |
