The month June was named after the Roman goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter, king of the gods (the equivalent of the Greek mythological god Zeus). She is the goddess of marriage, fertility and childbirth.
The name June did not replace the former Germanic names Brachet or Brachmond (fallow month) until the 18th century, which referred to three- field crop rotation and preservation by allowing a field to lie fallow (brach = undeveloped, unused).
In June everything blossoms; it is the month of flowers.
Midsummer’s day is on 21st June and is the longest day and shortest night of the year: summer solstice!
